Bat Removal and Bat Control in Sarnia, Ontario

Bat problems in Sarnia are different from the bat problems we see in cottage country, larger inland cities. There are two bat species that will utilize Sarnia’s mix of newer subdivisions, older city homes, brick houses, and bungalows near Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, and rural Lambton County.

Within the city of Sarnia, most house bat problems involve big brown bats.

Big brown bats are more common in urban areas and they tend to form small transient colonies and will move back and forth amongst several houses.

They and will use gaps in walls, soffits, roof edges, chimneys, attic edges, and hidden construction gaps to enter attics and walls.

The other species encountered in Sarnia is the little brown bat. They are now mostly found outside the city, little brown bats were once far more common throughout the Sarnia area, especially alone the shore of Lake Huron, rivers, streams, and other shoreline habitat.

That changed dramatically after white-nose syndrome spread through Ontario, nearly wiping out local populations by about 2013–2014.

In recent years, however, we have been seeing a strong recovery. Little brown bats appear to be doing well along the Lake Huron shoreline and are now making their way back into Sarnia, the surrounding countryside, and inland areas connected by rivers, streams, and lakes.

Because of Sarnia’s proximity to Lake Huron we expect little brown bats to become more common in Sarnia over the next several years. For homeowners, this matters because little brown bats can create much larger residential colonies than big brown bats.

Before white-nose syndrome, a “small” little brown bat colony in a house often meant several hundred bats, and we regularly worked on homes with thousands. While those large colonies largely disappeared after 2013–2014, the species is clearly bouncing back, and we are seeing more signs of little brown bats moving inland from Lake Huron shoreline habitat into urban Sarnia and the surrounding region.

Why Sarnia Homes Get Bats

Houses are not built to be bat-proof. Builders are focused on construction, weather protection, ventilation, appearance, and code requirements — not on stopping bats and mice from finding every small construction gap. As a result, many homes contain normal roofline, soffit, fascia, siding, vent, chimney, and flashing openings that bats can use to get inside.

Sarnia Case Study: Complete Bat-Proofing After Hidden Entry Points Were Found

The Problem: Occasional Bats Inside the Home.

The homeowner had been dealing with the occasional bat showing up inside the house for several years, creating a lot of stress and anxiety.

They were not seeing large numbers of bats leaving the roof, hearing regular noises, or finding heavy droppings outside, so the problem was easy to underestimate.

The breaking point came when they heard loud chirping from the attic hatch, lifted it open, and found a bat sitting right on top of it. That was when they called us.

What We Did

The house was bat-proofed in the proper order. First, the secondary and potential entry points were sealed with proper materials. Then humane excluders were installed only on the final active exit points so the bats could leave safely without getting back inside.

The Result

The home was fully bat-proofed instead of simply patched. The bats were allowed to leave humanely, and the hidden re-entry points were closed so the problem would not continue somewhere else on the structure.

Why General Wildlife Companies Often Miss Sarnia Bat Problems

Most wildlife control companies are generalists. They may deal with raccoons, squirrels, skunks, birds, mice, and many other animals. Bat control is different.

Bat work fails when the company only treats the obvious opening and leaves the rest of the house open. Sarnia homes can have hidden gaps around soffits, fascia, brick, chimneys, vents, porch roofs, garage rooflines, and additions. If those secondary openings are missed, bats can simply move to another gap.

Proper bat control requires a full inspection, complete bat-proofing, correct timing, and humane exclusion.

Bat problems continue when the obvious hole is treated but the rest of the structure is left open.

How We Bat-Proof Sarnia Homes Properly

Our process is designed to solve the entire bat problem, not just block the hole someone happened to notice.

First, we inspect the exterior of the home and identify the active entry points, secondary openings, and potential re-entry gaps. This includes soffits, fascia, roof vents, chimneys, brick wall gaps, siding, flashing, porch roofs, attached garages, additions, and roofline transitions.

Next, we bat-proof the structure by closing the secondary and potential entry points with proper materials.

Only after the house has been properly bat-proofed do we install humane excluders on the final active exit points. The excluders allow bats to leave safely but prevent them from getting back inside.

That order matters. Bat-proof first. Exclude last.

Bats Showing Up Inside Sarnia Homes

When bats appear inside living spaces, they are usually coming from hidden areas of the structure. They may move through walls, ceiling gaps, attic spaces, furnace rooms, unfinished areas, or openings around ducts, pipes, and registers.

A bat found in a bedroom, basement, kitchen, hallway, or living room should not be dismissed as a random accident. It usually means bats are already using the house somewhere.

Interior Evidence and Exterior Clues

Signs of bats in a home are not always obvious.

You may notice droppings in the attic, small piles of droppings outside, bats hanging around the porch, chirping sounds in walls or ceilings, bats appearing inside the living space, or bats leaving from the roofline at dusk.

Because most residential bat colonies are small, the clues can be subtle and easy to miss at first.

Timing Matters With Bat Exclusion

Bat removal must be done humanely and with proper attention to timing. Ontario bats should not be poisoned, trapped, or killed. Proper bat control uses humane exclusion methods that allow bats to leave without being harmed.

Timing is especially important during maternity season, when young bats may not yet be able to fly. A proper bat-control plan has to consider the season, species, colony behaviour, and the structure before exclusion work is done.

The number of true bat specialists in Ontario is very small. Reading a house properly takes years of experience: knowing where to look, understanding the signs, and being able to tell the difference between a maternity colony and a seasonal colony of male bats. Most wildlife companies simply do not have technicians with that level of bat-specific training or experience, which is why important signs are often missed.

Are bats protected in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario has eight bat species, and seven are currently listed as endangered. The only exception is the big brown bat. Regardless of conservation status, killing bats is not acceptable. Poisons, traps, and lethal methods are illegal.

Do bat houses, lights, sprays, mothballs, or noise machines get bats out?

No. Bat houses, lights, sprays, mothballs, and ultrasonic noise devices do not remove bats from a house. If bats are using the structure, the house must be properly bat-proofed.
