Big brown bats may remain inside buildings throughout the winter.
They can hibernate in walls, attics, insulation and other protected parts of the structure. During mild winter weather, one may wake and move into the living space.
Summer and early fall are the busiest periods for indoor bat appearances, but winter sightings are also possible.
Big brown bats may:
Change roosting locations within the house
Move deeper into walls during temperature changes
Appear in finished or partially finished basements
Travel through open ceiling spaces
