One of the first questions almost every homeowner asks is:

“How did a bat get into my basement?”

The answer surprises most people.

The bat almost certainly didn’t enter through the basement.

Despite what many homeowners believe, bats almost never enter homes through foundation cracks or basement windows. They typically enter much higher, around the roofline.

One of the biggest misconceptions about bats is that they somehow enter homes at ground level.

In nearly four decades of specializing exclusively in bats, we’ve never encountered a house where a bat colony established its regular entry and exit point around the foundation.

Their primary access points are high up on the structure—around rooflines, soffits, fascia, dormers, chimney flashings, roof intersections and other elevated construction details.

Excluded bats that have been sealed out of their normal entry point may investigate a low opening while desperately trying to get back inside.

That is not the same thing as a colony using a foundation-level opening as its normal entrance.

It’s an exception, not the rule.

The important point is this:

If you’re finding bats in your basement, don’t waste time looking for where they got in downstairs. The problem is up on the roof.

Most homeowners naturally look at the basement first. The real problem is always much higher on the house.

Why Basements Are the Number One Place Homeowners Find Bats

Most homeowners assume that if a bat is flying around the basement, it must have entered the house there.

In reality, the opposite is usually true.

The basement is the last place the bat reaches after entering much higher on the house.

But it is usually the first place they show up inside. And the reason they show up there first is because many basements are unfinished, partly finished or have and unfinished furnace room.

To understand why, it helps to understand how houses are built.

Once bats enter through an opening around the roofline, they don’t simply stay in the attic. They begin moving through the hidden spaces inside the structure, using wall cavities, framing voids and construction chases to travel throughout the house.

Eventually, many of those hidden pathways lead to the basement.


Houses Are Full of Hidden Bat Highways

If you’ve ever looked up at the ceiling of an unfinished basement, you’ve probably noticed dozens of holes and openings.

Those openings weren’t made by bats.

They’re part of normal home construction.

Builders have to route plumbing pipes, electrical wiring, heating ducts, gas lines, chimney chases and other utilities between floors. Every one of those systems requires openings through the framing.

Why Furnace Rooms Are Such Common Places to Find Bats

In finished basements one of the most common places homeowners discover bats is the furnace room.

That’s because furnace rooms are rarely completely sealed. Essentially If your home is heated with forced air it’s illegal to have combustible materials like drywall and wood framing against the ductwork plenum. Therefore furnace room ceilings are never fully finished and usually wide open.

Heating ducts, plumbing, gas piping, electrical wiring and chimney systems all pass through the ceiling into the floors above.

Those openings connect directly with the hidden framing inside the house.

Even in homes with beautifully finished basements, the mechanical room often exposes more of those hidden construction spaces than anywhere else in the home.

For a bat travelling down inside the walls, the furnace room frequently becomes the first opportunity to emerge into open living space.

Hidden Highways

Every opening through the basement ceiling connects to hidden spaces inside the house. Bats use these construction routes to move throughout the structure after entering through the roof.

Once a bat begins following one of these hidden routes, it’s surprisingly easy for it to end up several floors below where it originally entered the house.

Here Are The Top Three Places Where Bats Get into Houses.

1. Gaps Where Shingles Meet Soffits.

2. Gaps Between Soffits & Walls.

Why Do Bats Come Down Into the Basement?

Once bats enter a house through the roof, many homeowners assume they stay in the attic.

That isn’t how most bats use a house.

Instead, they spend much of their time living in, exploring and moving through the hidden wall cavities inside the structure. Those walls provide shelter, protection from predators and temperatures that are often much more comfortable than a hot attic.

Eventually, many bats work their way down toward the basement.

The reasons may surprise you.


Big Brown Bats Prefer the Walls Over the Attic

In Ontario, the species most commonly found inside homes is the Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus).

Unlike Little Brown Bats, which often form large maternity colonies in attics, Big Brown Bats spend much of the summer living inside the walls of the house.

Attics become extremely hot during July and August.

Wall cavities are often considerably cooler.

For Big Brown Bats, those hidden spaces provide a more stable environment for resting during the day and raising their young.

This is one of the reasons homeowners often find large amounts of bat droppings in the attic without ever seeing many bats there.

The attic frequently serves as a travel route and a place where droppings accumulate, while many of the bats themselves spend much of the day deeper inside the walls.

How Bats Get Out Of Attics & Into The Walls.

Bats often move from attics into interior walls through framing gaps around plumbing pipes, electrical wires, ductwork and chimneys.

Complicated rooflines, connected additions and intersecting attic spaces create even more hidden openings that allow bats to travel deeper into the house.

Cool Basement Air Draws Bats Downward

Even in the middle of summer, basements stay much cooler than attics.

Small amounts of cool air naturally leak upward around plumbing pipes, electrical wiring, ductwork and other openings inside the walls.

To a bat resting inside those wall cavities, that cooler airflow can be very attractive during hot weather.

Eventually, they may emerge into the basement.

Rather than remaining near the sweltering roof, some bats simply follow the cooler temperatures downward.

Young Bats Sometimes Make Wrong Turns

During midsummer, baby bats become large enough to begin exploring outside the areas where they were born.

Like any young animal, they make mistakes.

Instead of continuing toward the roof exit, a young bat may follow a wall cavity downward and accidentally emerge into the basement.

Once inside, getting back into the wall isn’t always easy.

That’s why many homeowners begin finding bats inside during July and August, when young bats are becoming more active and independent.

Sometimes Bats Mistake the Basement for Outside

As evening approaches, temperatures begin to drop.

For bats, cooler air is one of the natural signals that nighttime is approaching and that it’s time to become active.

Instead of finding the outdoors, it suddenly finds itself inside your home.

Once They’re in the Basement, They’re Often Lost

This is an important point.

The basement wasn’t the bat’s destination.

It was an accident.

The small opening the bat used to leave the wall cavity can be surprisingly difficult to find again.

Instead of returning to the hidden spaces inside the wall, the bat begins flying around the basement searching for another way out.

If it can’t find one, it often starts exploring the rest of the house.

That’s one of the reasons homeowners eventually discover bats upstairs, in living rooms, kitchens and even bedrooms.

The bat isn’t trying to get to people.

It’s simply trying to escape.

The bat became trapped inside the house.

Contrary to what many homeowners believe, a dead bat in the basement does not usually mean the bat was living there.

In most cases, the bat entered the house through an opening around the roofline, travelled down through the hidden spaces inside the walls, and eventually emerged into the basement.

Unfortunately, getting out of the wall is often much easier than getting back into it.

Bats Don’t Die of Starvation First

One of the biggest misconceptions is that trapped bats starve to death.

They usually don’t.

Dehydration kills them first.

Like every other mammal, bats require water.

Once trapped inside a house, they quickly begin looking for moisture.

  • beside floor drains
  • inside laundry rooms
  • clinging to basement walls near utility sinks
  • floating in toilets
  • sitting in bathtubs
  • near sump pits
  • beside pet water bowls

The bat isn’t trying to get into the plumbing.

It’s desperately looking for water.

Most trapped bats are simply dehydrated and exhausted.

Why You Sometimes Find a Bat One Day… But Not the Next

This happens all the time.

A homeowner calls and says:

“There was definitely a bat in the basement last night. This morning it’s gone.”

People often assume the bat somehow escaped.

Sometimes it did.

If the bat was able to locate the small opening where it emerged from the wall cavity, it may have climbed back inside the structure and eventually found its normal exit around the roof.

Hidden Places Where Trapped Bats Sometimes End Up

Sometimes they survive and eventually reappear.

Sometimes they don’t.

A trapped bat may disappear into:

  • heating ductwork
  • return air ducts
  • ceiling joists
  • utility chases
  • unfinished wall cavities
  • storage rooms
  • suspended ceilings

Unfortunately, bats that die inside concealed spaces can occasionally create an unpleasant odour until the body naturally decomposes.

Where did the bat go?

A bat that suddenly disappears hasn’t necessarily left the house. Sometimes it simply moves into another hidden space.

Check Your Furnace Filter

If a bat disappears inside your basement and you can’t find it again, one simple step may help.

Remove the furnace filter temporarily and check it regularly over the next day or two.

Occasionally, trapped bats enter the ductwork while searching for another route through the house.

With the filter removed, they may be able to leave the duct system and return to the basement instead of becoming trapped inside the furnace plenum or ductwork.

If you do this, remember to reinstall the filter afterward.

Removing the furnace filter for a short time may provide an escape route if a trapped bat has entered the ductwork.

Finding Dead Bats Usually Means There’s a Bigger Problem

Finding one dead bat in the basement doesn’t necessarily mean you have a large colony.

However, it does mean bats entered your house somehow.

If you’ve found:

  • more than one bat,
  • repeated dead bats,
  • bat droppings,
  • scratching or chirping sounds,
  • or bats appearing over multiple years,

A Dead Bat Is a Clue

A dead bat in the basement isn’t usually where the problem started.

It’s evidence that a live bat entered through the roof, travelled through the walls, became trapped inside your home and couldn’t find its way back out.

The solution isn’t the basement.

The solution is finding and permanently bat-proofing the exterior entry points.

Why Do Bats Eventually Show Up Upstairs?

One of the most common questions homeowners ask is:

“If the bats are in the basement, why did I find one in my bedroom?”

The answer is surprisingly simple.

If a bat can’t get back up into the wall where it came from, and go in and out normally, it’s going to start looking for another way out of the house. This means it will start crawling under doors and coming up the stairs. It’s only got a couple of day to find a way out before its begins dying of dehydration.

Once a bat becomes trapped inside your basement, it has only two choices:

  • Find its way back into the hidden wall cavities.
  • Continue searching through the house for another way outside.

Unfortunately for the bat, finding the tiny opening it originally used to leave the wall cavity isn’t always possible.

A trapped bat doesn’t know where your doors and windows are. It simply keeps searching for an escape route.

Why Bats Travel Upstairs

Once trapped inside the living space, bats naturally move from room to room just by crawling under doors. Ironically the doors you want them to go out thru (exterior doors) are the only ones that don’t have an airspace underneath.

Every room they enter is simply another place to search.

Eventually, many bats find themselves climbing the basement stairs and moving onto the main floor.

If they still can’t escape, they often continue upstairs.

Why Bats in Bedrooms Are So Common.

This surprises many homeowners.

Bedrooms are actually one of the most common places people discover bats.

Not because bats want to be there.

Because bedrooms are usually the last rooms explored during the bat’s search for an exit. And the homeowners are often there too. But by the time they reach you in the bedroom, the bat may have already travelled through:

  • the basement
  • the furnace room
  • the main floor
  • hallways
  • staircases
  • before finally reaching an upstairs bedroom.

They’re Not Trying To Attack You

When homeowners wake up at two o’clock in the morning and see a bat flying around the bedroom, it’s easy to imagine the worst.

The reality is much less dramatic.

The bat isn’t trying to attack anyone.

It isn’t trying to drink blood.

It isn’t interested in people at all.

It’s simply lost.

After becoming trapped inside the house, it continues moving from room to room looking for an exit that doesn’t exist.

Unfortunately, bedrooms are often one of the final places it searches.

In virtually every case, it entered through the roof, travelled through the hidden wall cavities, emerged into the basement, became trapped inside the house and eventually wandered upstairs while searching for a way out.

A bat that disappears inside the house hasn’t necessarily left. It may simply have found another temporary hiding place.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it escaped.

Sometimes the bat simply finds another hiding place.

  • furniture
  • curtains
  • shelving
  • loose trim
  • fireplaces
  • utility chases
  • unfinished wall cavities

Or, if it’s lucky, it may locate the opening back into the hidden wall spaces and eventually make its way out through its normal roof exit.

  • in the basement,
  • living room,
  • kitchen,
  • bathroom,
  • hallway,
  • or bedroom…

Unless all the exterior entry points are found and permanently sealed, additional bats will continue to use the structure and more will find their way into your living space.

Bats in the Basement During Winter

Finding a bat flying around your basement in January or February surprises many homeowners.

Most people assume bats disappear for the winter.

That depends on the species.

In Ontario, the only two bat species that live in houses behave very differently once cold weather arrives.

Big Brown Bats Stay in Houses All Winter

If your home has Big Brown Bats, they are year-round residents.

Unlike Little Brown Bats, Big Brown Bats generally do not leave houses every autumn to hibernate in caves or abandoned mines.

Instead, they simply move to different parts of the house as the seasons change.

During summer they spend much of their time inside wall cavities and other warm areas of the structure.

As winter approaches, they begin looking for places that remain cool enough for hibernation but are protected from freezing temperatures.

One of their favourite places is behind the insulated walls of a finished basement.

Behind finished basement walls, bats can move higher or lower depending on outdoor temperatures while remaining protected from freezing weather.

Why Finished Basement Walls Make Excellent Hibernation Sites

This is one of the least understood parts of bat behaviour inside houses.

A finished basement wall creates a narrow space between the concrete foundation and the fibreglass insulation.

That hidden cavity provides a surprisingly stable winter environment.

Moving With The Temperature

If outdoor temperatures become extremely cold, bats can simply move lower, below ground level, where the surrounding earth helps moderate the temperature.

If winter weather becomes unusually warm, they can move slightly higher inside the same wall cavity.

They don’t need to leave the wall.

They simply adjust their position within it.

It’s an ideal place to spend the winter.

Bats Don’t Sleep All Winter

Many homeowners picture bats hibernating continuously from autumn until spring.

That’s not what happens.

Big Brown Bats periodically wake up throughout the winter.

They may:

  • stretch their wings
  • groom themselves
  • urinate
  • defecate
  • mate
  • occasionally change hibernation locations

Sometimes homeowners see one flying around the basement during one of these brief periods of activity.

A new bat did not enter the house during winter.

It’s a bat that is living inside the walls of your home.

Winter Activity Is Normal

A winter bat isn’t a new bat. It’s a resident that has temporarily awakened from hibernation.

Why Bats Often Leave the Wall During Winter

One interesting behaviour we’ve observed is that bats generally don’t remain inside the hibernation cavity when they need to relieve themselves.

Instead, they often leave the wall, fly around the basement for a short time, urinate and defecate, then return to the wall cavity to continue hibernating.

That means a homeowner may occasionally discover:

  • a bat flying through the basement,
  • fresh droppings,
  • or a bat resting on the basement wall…

even though the colony has been inside the house all winter.

Fresh droppings in winter often indicate bats have briefly left their hibernation area before returning to the walls.

Bat droppings are often seen in attics more frequently than the bats themselves, especially with Big Brown Bats.

They commonly use attics—and sometimes basements in winter—as toilet areas because they avoid fouling the wall cavities where they sleep, raise their young and hibernate.

This intelligent behaviour reflects a strong instinct for keeping their living areas clean.

What seems gross to the homeowner is actually the bats exercising basic sanitation.

Little Brown Bats Leave For Winter.

Little Brown Bats behave differently.

In Ontario, the other bat species that lives in houses, the little brown bat, typically leave during autumn and spends the winter hibernating in caves, abandoned mines and other natural underground sites.

Because of that, homeowners who continue finding bats inside throughout the winter are dealing with Big Brown Bats. Although it’s not impossible, we have never once in nearly 4 decades personally encountered little brown bats hibernating in houses.

Winter Bats Mean The House Still Has An Entry Problem

Whether you find bats in July or January, the conclusion is the same.

At some point, bats gained access to your home through openings around the building exterior.

Removing a winter bat doesn’t solve that problem.

The permanent solution is to identify every exterior entry point and professionally bat-proof the house, humanely exclude the bats so the bats cannot continue using it.

If you have a bat flying around your basement, your first priority is simple:

Get the bat back outside safely.

Your second priority is figuring out how it got into the house in the first place.

Removing the bat solves today’s problem.

Finding and permanently sealing the entry points around the roof solves the problem for good.

Don’t Panic

What You Should Never Do

There are plenty of products marketed to homeowners that claim to solve bat problems.

Unfortunately, they don’t address the real issue.

None Of These Fix The Problem

Avoid scam products and stupid “cures” like:

  • ultrasonic devices
  • mothballs
  • sprays and repellents
  • bright lights
  • smoke
  • ammonia
  • peppermint products

None of these products permanently stop bats from entering through the roof and travelling inside the walls.

The only permanent solution is to identify every exterior entry point and professionally bat-proof the house.

If You Keep Finding Bats…

Finding one bat doesn’t necessarily mean you have a colony. It does mean bats are getting into and using your building.

Finding bats means you should investigate further.

Especially if you’ve experienced:

  • bats over multiple years,
  • repeated bats in the basement,
  • bats in upstairs bedrooms,
  • along with scratching or chirping sounds in the walls,
  • bat droppings,
  • or dead bats,

There is a good chance bats will continuing to enter the structure and show up inside.

That’s when it’s time for a complete exterior inspection and permanent bat-proofing.

We Don’t Just Remove Bats…

We find out how they got there.

If you’re finding bats in your basement, the real problem almost certainly isn’t the basement.

It’s the building exterior particularly around the roof.

Our job is to find every entry point, permanently bat-proof the house, and stop bats from reaching your basement in the first place.

Signs You Have Bats.

Sometimes homeowners see a bat flying around the basement.

Other times, they never see a bat at all.

Instead, they notice small clues that something is living inside the house.

Those clues can tell you a great deal about what’s happening behind the walls.

The important thing to remember is this:

The basement usually isn’t where the bats are living. It’s where evidence of their activity often shows up first.

Seeing the Same Bat More Than Once

Many homeowners assume they’re seeing a different bat every time.

Very rarely they are.

Mostly they aren’t.

But homeowners often want it to be one bat.

They want it to be a fluke.

They want the solution to be as simple as getting rid of the one pesky bat that is causing all the trouble.

They at least want to try to get rid of the “one” bat first and see if that works.

It won’t.

And as much as you may want it to be “just one bat” most bats that end up lost inside your house don’t make the mistake of coming into your living space again, if they are lucky enough to survive the ordeal.

So the next time you succeed in getting a bat out of your house remember that it will likely remember, not to make the same mistake twice.

And when homeowners sometimes report:

“It keeps showing up in the basement and then vanishes.”

Bats Flying Around the Basement at Night

Homeowners often tell us they never see bats during the day.

Only after dark.

That makes sense.

Bats are nocturnal.

If a bat becomes trapped inside your basement, it usually becomes much more active after sunset.

That’s when homeowners are most likely to see it flying around the room.

One Bat Doesn’t Always Mean a Large Colony

Finding one bat inside doesn’t automatically mean you have dozens.

Sometimes a single bat accidentally enters the living space while the rest of the colony remains hidden inside the walls.

However, if you’re repeatedly finding bats, hearing noises, or discovering fresh droppings over an extended period, there’s a good chance the house has an active colony using entry points around the roof.

That’s when it’s time to investigate the exterior of the house—not just the basement.

The Basement Gives You Clues

The basement often provides the first visible evidence that bats are living somewhere else inside the structure.

The bat you see downstairs is rarely the beginning of the story.

It’s usually the result of bats entering around the roof, travelling through hidden wall cavities, and eventually emerging into the basement.

Bat Droppings or Mouse Droppings?

Homeowners often mistake bat droppings for mouse droppings, but there are a few easy ways to tell the difference. Bat droppings are typically about the size of a grain of cooked rice, dark brown to black in colour, and crumble easily into a powder when gently pressed because they’re made almost entirely of insect remains. Fresh bat droppings may also leave a faint moisture stain on the surface beneath them.

Mouse droppings, on the other hand, are much smaller—about the size of a sesame seed—and are hard, smooth and dense. They do not crumble when crushed. Correctly identifying the droppings is often the first step in determining whether you’re dealing with a bat problem or a rodent problem. Although in most houses it’s not unusual to have both.

By now, you’ve probably noticed a pattern.

Every section of this guide points back to the same conclusion.

The basement isn’t where the problem begins.

It’s simply where many homeowners first discover it.

If bats are showing up in your basement, they’re already inside the structure.

Catching a bat and releasing it outside may solve today’s emergency.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t solve tomorrow’s.

If the exterior entry points remain open, another bat can enter the house tomorrow night and follow the very same route through the walls.

Houses usually have many other openings that bats could use.

If only the active opening is sealed, the colony often relocates to another nearby gap.

That’s why complete bat-proofing means much more than plugging one hole.

Humane Exclusion Comes Last

Once every secondary opening has been sealed, humane one-way exits can be installed on the remaining active entry points.

These allow the bats to leave naturally at dusk but prevent them from getting back inside.

Only after the colony has safely exited are those final openings permanently sealed.

That’s what stops bats from reaching your basement again.

Why DIY Repairs Often Fail

One of the most common reasons homeowners continue finding bats is that only the obvious opening was sealed.

The bats simply moved.

Sometimes only a few feet.

Sometimes to the opposite side of the roof.

The result is frustrating.

The homeowner believes the repair failed.

In reality, the colony simply found another available route into the same house.

The reality is bat-control is difficult, and highly specialized and homeowners haven’t a prayer when they try to fix it themselves.

Why Wildlife Companies Often Miss Basement Bats

Wildlife companies fail so consistently at bat control because most are jack-of-all-trades built around raccoons, squirrels and skunks—large animals that create obvious holes.

Bats are a completely different problem. Like mice, they exploit tiny, hidden gaps throughout the roofline, framing and exterior envelope, and finding every one of those openings requires specialized training, construction knowledge and a high volume of bat-specific experience.

Most wildlife operators simply do not get enough bat jobs to develop that expertise, so they seal a few obvious spots, disturb the colony and mistake a quiet year or two for success.

People want to believe there are only one or two obvious entry points and that sealing those will solve everything. The reality is that houses can contain countless tiny construction gaps that bats may use, many of them hidden around the roofline, soffits, flashing and framing. That makes homeowners easy targets for non-specialists who dabble in bat work, seal a few convenient spots and charge less for an incomplete job. They promise the moon and cannot deliver cheese, but because the cheaper explanation is the one people want to hear, many homeowners only discover the truth after the bats return and they have to pay again to have the house done properly.

The homeowner wanted the problem fixed permanently

For years, bats had appeared periodically inside this Bobcaygeon home, most often in the basement. Her husband had always dealt with the occasional bat when one found its way into the living space, but she had reached the point where she no longer felt comfortable living with the uncertainty.

She did not want to spend every summer wondering when another bat might suddenly appear. She called us to determine how the bats were entering the house, how they were reaching the basement and what would be required to bat-proof the building permanently.

This was not a massive, obvious colony. It appeared to involve relatively small numbers of bats using the house over many years. Nevertheless, the repeated indoor appearances were extremely upsetting, and the accumulated evidence made it clear that this was a long-standing problem—not a bat that had simply flown in through an open door or window.

Evidence of bat activity in the basement

Bat droppings were visible on the basement floor, confirming that bats had been moving through the lower levels of the house.

In a second, partially finished basement room, transparent vapour-barrier plastic had been installed across the underside of the ceiling joists. Additional droppings were clearly visible above the plastic, on top of the vapour barrier and between the joists.

Because the vapour barrier was transparent, we could photograph the evidence from below without disturbing or removing it. The droppings confirmed that bats had been using the basement ceiling cavity—not merely flying briefly through the room after entering from outside.

The size, location and distribution of the droppings, combined with the homeowner’s history of periodic indoor appearances, were consistent with big brown bats using the building over an extended period.

The bats entered at roof level and travelled downward

Although the bats were appearing in the basement, they were not entering the house at basement level. The exterior evidence showed that they were gaining access much higher up through gaps around the dormer, soffits, brickwork and roofline.

Once inside the structure, the bats could move downward through hidden wall cavities, framing gaps and ceiling spaces until they reached the basement. This is why finding a bat downstairs does not mean the entry point is nearby—the original opening is usually somewhere around the roof.

The clearest exterior evidence was concentrated around the projecting front dormer, where several openings showed heavy scratching, dark staining and greasy-looking rub marks.

These markings develop when animals repeatedly squeeze through the same tight gaps and brush against the surrounding materials. Although bats were using these openings, much of the pronounced staining was probably caused by mice, as the house also had a substantial mouse infestation.

The location and extent of the markings confirmed that these were not harmless construction gaps. They were repeatedly used access points for both bats and rodents.

The one-way excluder was installed over the principal active opening, and every surrounding gap along the soffit and brickwork was carefully sealed. This prevented the bats from slipping around the device through a nearby opening while still allowing them to leave the house safely without getting back inside.

Several areas had wide, irregular gaps where the stonework met the soffits. These openings were too deep to fill properly with sealant alone.

Foam backer was installed first to support the sealant and control its depth. The gaps were then closed with an appropriate exterior-grade sealant, creating a cleaner, stronger and more durable repair.

Hidden soffit-to-shingle gaps

Several vulnerable soffit-to-roof intersections were concealed behind the eavestrough and could not be properly accessed from below.

Sections of gutter had to be temporarily moved so the hidden openings could be inspected and sealed with roof-grade silicone. This is why a quick ground-level inspection is not enough: important bat entry points may be concealed behind gutters, shingles, trim and overlapping flashings.

The house was bat-proofed before the bats were excluded

Before installing the one-way excluder, we sealed every other opening around the roof that bats or mice could use, including the roof vents, chimney, flashing gaps, soffit intersections, dormer rooflines, skylights and roof edges.

Only after the remainder of the exterior had been bat-proofed was the excluder installed over the principal active opening. Otherwise, the bats could leave through the device and simply return through another unsealed gap elsewhere on the house.

The correct order is:

  1. Seal every secondary and potential entry point.
  2. Leave the confirmed active opening temporarily available.
  3. Install the one-way excluder.
  4. Allow the bats to leave safely without getting back inside.
  5. Remove the excluder and permanently seal the final opening.

Proper bat removal begins by bat-proofing the entire house—not by hanging a tube over one obvious hole and hoping for the best.

The result

The bats left through the one-way excluder and stopped appearing inside the house.

The homeowner no longer had to spend each season worrying about unexpectedly finding another bat in the basement or dealing with one on her own. More importantly, we corrected the complete exterior building envelope rather than placing a temporary device over one opening and hoping for the best.

What happens if you ignore bats in the basement?

Usually, nothing dramatic happens overnight.

Ignoring the problem does not necessarily mean the attic will suddenly fill with thousands of bats or enormous piles of guano. Most big brown bat colonies living in Ontario houses are relatively small, and many homeowners experience only occasional indoor appearances.

The more likely outcome is that the problem simply continues.

Bats remain able to enter the house, move through the walls and occasionally end up in the basement or another part of the living space. No. Bats do not travel through plumbing systems or enter homes through floor drains or sump pits.

Homeowners sometimes find bats near drains or sump pits because trapped bats search for water when they become dehydrated. That’s very different from using those features as entry points into the house.

Short answer:

Short answer:

Bat droppings in the basement usually mean bats are getting into your basement and going back into the walls again. Droppings could also be falling out of wall cavities where they live.
